Even some Best FREE VPN from China find it challenging to bypass China’s Great Firewall unless they have highly sophisticated obfuscation techniques to conceal your VPN usage. Free VPNs from mainland China are rarely effective in China because they usually do not offer this technology, and they often lack the funds to upgrade their servers and stealth capabilities.
Furthermore, most mainland Chinese free VPN services come with many limitations, their business models can compromise your privacy, and their security measures are inadequate. Why Do I Need a VPN in China?
The primary reason for using a VPN in China is to protect your data from government and ISP surveillance. However, before freely accessing the internet, you should also consider the following:
- Security: Online criminals and other online threats are still a real concern for your data security. A reliable and secure VPN can protect your data and devices from leaks or hacking attempts. Additionally, it’s well-known that China monitors internet traffic, so a VPN allows you to browse anonymously and securely without the government or ISP knowing what you’re doing online.
- Access Geo-Restricted Content: Some websites provide region-specific content, such as various Netflix libraries. To access more content, you need a reliable VPN to change your IP address location and enjoy unlimited global content.
- Unblock Websites: China’s online censorship and restrictions on which websites users can access are very strict. Many sites, especially Western ones, are blocked. With a VPN, you can bypass these restrictions and freely browse any website you want.
What Is China’s Great Firewall?
China’s Great Firewall, formally known as the “Golden Shield Project,” is responsible for regulating domestic internet access. Since all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in China are government-owned, they can monitor all your traffic and block certain websites considered dangerous or inappropriate. Unfortunately, the blocklist is quite extensive and includes Facebook, Twitter, most search engines, messaging services, not to mention Netflix and YouTube.
China began strict internet censorship in 1997, just three years after the internet’s introduction. In 2003, the Golden Shield Project was launched, not only for censorship but also to promote the Communist Party’s ideology. For example, you would know that Hong Kong and Taiwan are part of China, but you wouldn’t find any information about the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
China employs various complex methods for internet censorship, including IP blocking, DNS tampering, keyword filtering through Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), and manual blocking. DPI is also used to detect and block VPN traffic, which is why the best VPNs must be able to evade DPI to work in China.
Without a VPN, you would be forced to communicate, shop online, and perform any online activities using local applications and websites. Your search keywords would be altered, and you would see government-approved businesses at the top of the results. Most importantly, due to China’s online surveillance apparatus, your online privacy would be non-existent.
How Does a VPN Bypass the Great Firewall?
By using an encrypted connection to an external server, you can bypass the Great Firewall. While there are many methods to achieve this, VPNs are the most popular and straightforward for most users. A VPN encrypts your connection, making it undetectable and preventing it from filtering out the pages you’re trying to access.
Additionally, your connection is routed through a network of external servers that have unrestricted internet access. This allows you to experience the internet as if you were in another location while you’re actually still in China. It’s worth noting that China has cracked down on most free VPN services and proxies.
The Great Firewall detects the IP ranges of some free VPNs and blocks them, rendering them useless. So, if you want a VPN that can serve you well, considering a paid VPN service provider is not a bad idea.

Why Does China Block Most VPNs?
China is an authoritarian regime that likes to monitor its citizens and visitors, restrict available online content, promote government propaganda, and prevent access to foreign sources. Since VPNs help bypass the Great Firewall to unlock websites and services, China views them as a threat and contrary to its policies.
In fact, VPNs are powerful tools that allow access to many blocked services, including social media and messaging, search engines, news websites, streaming, torrent downloads, and more. Without a VPN, citizens would be limited to using local online services while revealing their IP addresses and online activities to ISPs, which are controlled by the state.
Interestingly, some VPNs that were effective before the policy tightening in 2018 still work today. This might be because China would harm its own economy without any VPNs since some foreign businesses require access to various online resources to operate. In a sense, China lets these few VPNs remain relatively undisturbed for its own benefit.

Recommended Totally Free VPN Downloads
There are tons of totally free VPN downloads on the market. However, the selection is the only impressive one here, as the service itself is not as good as the premium services we mentioned. Anyway, I’d like to clarify. These are 100% free VPNs, which means no payments, no credit card info, that sort of thing.
Some of them will ask you to create a free account and that’s it. After that, you can use them for free forever without paying a dime. If that’s clear, here are our top 2 favorite free VPNs:
4. ProtonVPN – Proton enjoys unlimited traffic without paying a dime!
Proton VPN offers security and privacy that makes you feel comfortable browsing the internet in countries with strict censorship, such as China. With over 2,970 servers in 68 countries, including servers in surrounding regions like Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and more, you can freely use the internet with a Chinese IP address.
Proton VPN is based in privacy-focused Switzerland and equipped with AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption protocols. It’s open-source, has a strict no-logs policy, and a reliable kill switch, ensuring that your online activities are secure and anonymous. With the WireGuard tunneling protocol, you can achieve reasonably stable download speeds when browsing the internet in China. Go to official website >>>
In our tests, Proton VPN successfully retained 69% of the original internet speed. In addition to all the security features, Proton VPN has NetShield to block malicious websites, ads, and trackers. The Secure Core works by offering double VPN, split tunneling, Tor over VPN, and alternative routing. Proton VPN offers well-developed and easy-to-use applications for all popular operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.
With a premium subscription, you can enjoy up to 10 simultaneous connections. If we ignore slightly above-average performance results, a smaller server network, and slow customer support response times, Proton VPN is an excellent choice for a China VPN. You can purchase a premium subscription for $4.99 per month or opt for a very limited free version. Go to official website >>>
5. Hide.me Free – with a 10GB data limit
With an 84% success rate, Hide.me is the fastest VPN for connecting to regions outside of China. It has dedicated and multi-hop servers that can bypass the Great Firewall. Hide.me is a private VPN that achieved an impressive 84% evasion rate of China’s censorship last year, making it one of the fastest VPNs we’ve tested, even on long-distance connections.
Hide.me’s obfuscation is highly effective at bypassing the Great Firewall, but it’s more suitable for advanced users due to its complex manual setup. It also features a VPN kill switch that blocks your internet connection if you disconnect from the server or switch servers on all popular devices. Moreover, it doesn’t comply with requests for user data.
To prove this, Hide.me publishes an annual transparency report detailing how many law enforcement and police requests for user data it received and how it couldn’t respond because it doesn’t retain identifiable information. Hide.me offers AES-256 encryption and a secure kill switch to prevent your IP address from leaking on all devices.
Hide.me’s kill switch is one of the best we’ve tested, though not as good as PIA’s, it still conceals your IP address in China. Hide.me offers various protocols, including OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2, SoftEther, and SSTP, and all these protocols are usable on both desktop and mobile apps. Go to Official Website >>
So far, the most useful feature for Chinese users is Hide.me’s multi-hop tool, allowing you to establish double VPN connections with your chosen entry and exit servers. This is much better than other VPNs that provide default double VPN servers and don’t allow you to customize connections to this extent.
Hide.me retains minimal connection data logs for troubleshooting, including your account information, internally assigned (non-public) IP addresses, and the data volume used during VPN sessions (aggregated).
This information is deleted every few hours and is unlikely to be used for tracking individual browsing activity. Hide.me even accepts Monero and Bitcoin payments to reduce traceability of transactions, and the VPN service operates from a privacy-friendly jurisdiction, Malaysia. Malaysian law doesn’t require VPN companies to retain logs of customer connections or network activity. Go to Official Website >>
What to Consider When Using Free VPNs in China
Choosing a VPN is already challenging with so many options available, but selecting one for use in China is even more challenging. Things get even more complicated when you opt for a free VPN. Here, we outline what you need to be cautious about when using free VPNs in China.
Server Count: For any country, a good VPN should have multiple servers in different locations. This is essential to ensure you don’t encounter overcrowded servers and slow connection speeds. Similarly, a VPN for use in China must have servers within the country. However, finding VPN providers with servers in China can be difficult. So, you can look for providers that have servers in neighboring countries/regions like Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong.
Strict No-Log Policy: Internet Service Providers (ISPs) track your internet connection logs, and the Chinese government can access such records. Therefore, when choosing a VPN, opt for one that doesn’t store or share user internet logs. This way, the government can’t trace your online activities.
Reliable Encryption: Encryption prevents third parties from accessing your data. A great free VPN for China should have military-grade encryption. You should also ensure that the VPN offers end-to-end encryption. This level of encryption helps protect your data from government surveillance, hackers, and data snooping.
Internet Kill Switch: When your internet connection drops, it affects your VPN connection. In such cases, your real IP address might be exposed. This is why an internet kill switch is crucial for a China VPN. When your VPN connection is interrupted, the kill switch automatically disconnects your internet connection, preventing your IP address from being exposed.
Cross-Platform Support: Chinese residents use various devices and operating systems. Therefore, a VPN for China should have applications compatible with most of these platforms. Additionally, a VPN that allows multiple connections on a single subscription is a good option.
Tips for Using Free VPNs in China
Using free VPNs in China requires extra caution due to the region’s unfriendly stance toward VPNs. Here are some important tips to consider when using free VPNs in China:
Install Before Traveling: If you’re planning to visit China, it’s best to install a VPN before your plane lands. Accessing VPNs in China can be much more difficult as Google Play Store and Apple AppStore are both blocked.
Additionally, most VPN websites are also blocked, making it impossible to download VPN apps from there. If you’re already in China, accessing VPN apps can be a bit risky. There are many VPN-friendly hotels around that integrate VPN with their WiFi networks, allowing you to download the apps. Alternatively, you can download APK versions of VPN apps. You can find them using Yahoo’s search engine since Google is blocked in China.
Consider Your Options Carefully: Before deciding on a free VPN, carefully consider your options. The first criterion to consider is whether the provider has servers in China or nearby countries/regions. Next, check the browsing speeds and connection stability of these servers. Finally, the protocols and servers should have the latest features, as this is the only way they can bypass the Great Firewall of China.
Connect to Nearest Servers: The closer the server’s location, the higher the server’s speed. So, when using a VPN in China, it’s best to connect to servers in neighboring countries. Countries/regions like South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong are ideal for this. However, if you want to access geo-restricted content, you’ll need to connect to servers in the specific countries/regions that are available. For example, to access Netflix US, you’ll need to connect to a server in the United States.
Consider Having a Backup VPN: While most of the VPNs discussed above are reliable, the Chinese government isn’t. It’s notorious for its strict censorship, especially under the current regime. In recent years, there have been increasing crackdowns on VPNs, with VPNs often becoming targets and getting shut down.
Some providers may temporarily suspend their services and then restore them. If your provider becomes a target or goes offline, having an alternative option is essential. If you plan to stay in China for an extended period or reside there, having a free backup VPN is a good idea.
How to Use the Best Free China VPN
Whether you’re using Android, iPhone, Windows, or any other operating system, you need a reliable free VPN to access restricted content and applications. However, not all VPNs can be used in China. So, if you want to save money, you can get one of the cheapest VPNs from our list. Most of them offer all the right features to bypass China’s restrictions and censorship.
How to Use a Free VPN for Android in China
To secure your smartphone and tablet, you need the best Android VPN for China, and you can get one by following these steps:
Start by creating a VPN account:
How to Use a Free VPN for iPhone in China
If you’re an iOS user, you should use the best iPhone VPN to bypass restrictions. To get one, follow these steps:
- Choose a trustworthy free trial VPN for China; our frontrunner is NordVPN.
- Install the app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Connect to a nearby server, like Taiwan.
- Amazingly, China’s firewall is no longer a barrier!
How to Use a Free VPN for Google Chrome
Some top-notch free VPNs offer browser extensions for Chrome. These protect only your browser traffic, but it’s still a good way to stay safe online in China. To get one, do the following:
- Get a powerful free trial VPN. We recommend NordVPN.
- Download the VPN plugin from the Chrome Web Store.
- Activate the extension and select a nearby server, for example, Japan.
- Now, your internet traffic in Chrome is secure!
Conclusion
While we understand why everyone wants to find a good free VPN for China, even the best free VPNs have limitations. All the completely free China VPN services listed above sacrifice one or more features, be it data limits, bandwidth restrictions, below-standard security, or a limited network of small servers in specific countries/regions.
If you’re looking for the most reliable and secure free VPN for China, we recommend using a provider that offers a free trial rather than a free plan, like NordVPN. So, the best free VPN for China might not be “free” at all but refundable, which may be better than using a China free VPN that can easily be blocked or simply won’t grant access to the websites and services you want to unlock.
If you’re looking to save money, we recommend Surfshark. for less than $2.50 per month, you’ll have unlimited data and simultaneous connections, rock-solid security, and in-depth features that free VPNs don’t have. Access is fast and all major streaming sites are unlocked. Surfshark is the best value for money.
You may also want a backup VPN; it’s advisable to register for more than one VPN if VPN usage is essential to you. Be prepared for the worst-case scenario and have a backup solution. Many people traveling to the region have already subscribed to more than one VPN service so that they can switch to another VPN if their original one becomes unusable.
How to get a free VPN for 30 days:
If you need a VPN for a short period of time while traveling abroad, get our top-ranked VPN for free. NordVPN offers a 30-day money back guarantee, which is real. You’ll need to pay upfront to use the subscription, but the subscription allows full access for 30 days. China VPN Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best China VPN available today?
The excellent NordVPN is our top choice for use in China. It’s reliable, fast, secure, and incredibly easy to set up and use. Its no-log policy has been audited by PwC, so you can trust that your identity is well-protected when you’re browsing and streaming in China. No other China VPN can match its ability to unlock and bypass restricted websites and services.
Is VPN legal in China?
In short, yes, VPNs are not illegal in China. This is because corporate VPNs have become an essential part of today’s online business, so a complete ban on VPN usage is not feasible. In other words, China is playing a cat-and-mouse game when it comes to banning VPNs for other purposes, but it’s safe to bet that unlocking the websites listed above would be included.
However, there have been no reports of travelers going to China being arrested for using VPNs. So, unless the government finds more compelling reasons to crack down on VPN usage, it appears relatively low-risk to use VPNs for now.
Will using a VPN in China cause problems?
Certainly, the country is not pleased with accessing restricted websites and services using VPN software, even though China has imposed bans on VPNs. Currently, it’s unclear how, or even if, users will be punished for using “unauthorized” software. Nevertheless, many VPN providers continue to sell their products to people within China.
Which websites are blocked in China?
The list of blocked websites and services in China is like a who’s who of the internet giants. We mentioned some above, but here’s a more comprehensive (though far from exhaustive) list:
How to unblock Google, YouTube, etc., in China
Fortunately, using a VPN to unblock websites is straightforward when you’re in China. If possible, we recommend selecting, downloading, and installing a VPN that’s compatible with China before you go there. This way, you won’t encounter any difficulties when accessing the provider’s website.
Next, get the application or client for the platform you’ll be using it on, whether that’s mobile devices, desktop devices, TV streaming devices, and so on. Afterward, it’s quite simple. Open the VPN client/application, select an appropriate server location (definitely outside of China), and turn on the VPN.
Your device will then think it’s in the country/region you’ve set for the server, so the service you choose won’t be blocked anymore. For example, you can watch British TV from abroad or unblock YouTube.
How to install a VPN in China domestically
If you’re already in China and want to install a VPN, I recommend first downloading The Onion Router (TOR) and combining it with Shadowsocks proxy to access VPN sites and purchase subscriptions. Some VPN services even have dedicated .onion websites to help people bypass censorship and government firewalls.
Then, you can download and install the VPN through TOR, and you can start using it. Just connect to the server you’ve chosen, and you can browse completely safely and privately.
